Year 3

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have completed another term online. We would like to thank you all for your support during term 3. We could not have done this without your ongoing encouragement and feedback. Students have certainly mastered Zoom and have worked very hard to complete online and at home tasks.

In English, we looked at report writing. Students wrote reports which described aspects of living and non-living things in detail. They made sure their reports had all the necessary features; they included a title, classification information and description, followed by a conclusion. They used factual language rather than imaginative vocabulary. Students were able demonstrate use of appropriate grammar and chose vocabulary and punctuation suitable for the purpose and context of their writing. Students shared their writing with their peers during Zoom sessions.

In mathematics we looked at number-based topics such as multiplication and division. Students explored appropriate written multiplication strategies such as ‘split strategy’ and ‘grid method’ to solve problems involving one and two-digit numbers. We identified the connection between addition and subtraction to explore related fact families. Students also explored data; examining various graphs to understand the features of common data displays such as picture and column graphs. Interpreting data allowed students to draw conclusions from data presented in graphs and compare the effectiveness of different data displays.

For integrated studies our focus was biology and earth and space science. Biological science involved students looking at the differences between living and non-living things, learning the main life functions such as growth, movement, reproduction, respiration, feeding and nutrition. They compared these structural features in functions of animals and plants. We classified animals into invertebrates and vertebrates and looked at characteristics of mammals, reptiles, fish, birds and amphibians. During our earth and space science studies, students examined how Earth’s rotation on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day, and we studied the space bodies that make up our solar system and beyond. Students were able to recognise the sun as a source of light, read about sundials and investigate how they work. We were able to describe timescales for the rotation of the Earth. Students completed a project and presented this with their peers during Zoom sessions.

On the last day of term 3 students were involved in a virtual camp experience. Students had to complete various tasks and challenges throughout the day. We have attached some photos from the day.

We would like to wish you all a safe and restful break to conquer the term ahead. We are in this together and will strive by working together.
